Multiracial people can struggle with questions of identity and where to fit in. They might feel external pressures to 'pick a side'. Even if you choose a racial group to identify with, however, they might reject you because you lack certain characteristics. 'Mixed Racer' is a short sci-fi film that imagines a 'mixed-race utopia'. It draws on Jonah Attalla's own Egyptian-Swiss heritage and Arabfuturism. It features a semi-fictional protagonist competing in a cosmic motorsport looking for a sense of belonging. Based on collective stories from the multiracial community, the narrative aims to deconstruct the categorization and eroticization of the mixed-race identity. It shows that there is community and pride in mixed-race experiences.

When you’re told your experiences with racism must have been imagined or misunderstood, you have been racially gaslit. The resulting fear of being seen as crazy for your ‘wrong’ perception of the world makes you doubt your reality. The protest T-shirt was once born of necessity to voice political causes and inspire confidence in its protesters. However, modern fashion has turned real activism into superficial symbols of ‘wokeness’ to be bought and sold. Jonah Attalla aims to reclaim the T-shirt's political power by designing for the individual, not the masses. Each shirt visualizes someone’s personal story of being racially gaslit. It speaks their feelings of anger and demands for change, while revealing a hidden societal problem that repeatedly silences the BIPOC community.

For one year, I documented my community in art school. It’s not just another photo project, but more of a memoir of the “it’s us against the world” spirit that comes with being immatriculated at art school. From generator-powered raves, to fashion shows in a swimming pool and DJ controllers strapped on backpacks. This book captures what it means to study within a safety net, free from the bounds of society.
